The Connection In Women Novelists - T ABRAHAM
All of us read books of many kinds written by various authors and about a variety of themes which are described in every unique way possible. Some themes are explained very plainly and some goes against our morality and ideologies. We usually find connection and comfort in anything that is easily relatable to us and we find ourselves being expressed by the author in their works. So, two such books in which I can find an ample number of connective forces is Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' and Charlotte Brontë's 'Jane Eyre'.
Firstly, let us go with Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'. This novel is something that makes the first connect by making a conservative approach to the theme of 'marriage'. The Bennet sisters having a very conservative household lets them be married only when the background check and the class based hierarchy is a suitable match for the girls. The parents are only concerned about the well being of their lovely children through the eternal bonding which should happen as per the will of God and it is seen then they want their children to stoop up to a higher level rather than stooping down to the least. There is also a need to marry within a class or community or only intra-class marriage is being focused upon.
When taken in an Indian context, it is a guide to find the right match rather than blindly trying to find the right person. There is a need for a thorough background checking process to be done before any match and there are certain castes in India which still believes in intra-caste marriages and are strongly opposed to the idea of inter-caste marriages. So, one who is from a very conservative household and from a caste which believes in intra-caste marriage finds the novel to have a very personal connect.
Here, in this novel Jane is always taken advantage of her situation and we can see that for her joy comes with it's nature of temporality and it turns back very soon even before she could cherish it. The situations in the novel is very connective for people who have their course of life filled with crookedness from their childhood till their death but still finds happiness and cherishes every moment.
Hence, these two works written by women novelists are more connective to people who live in a woman dominated atmosphere or is being majorly influenced by women who helps one in becoming a better version of one's self in a given time period.
